My Move to Canada

By Jessica

When I was 8 I moved to Canada. My mom's family lived in Canada and my dad's family lived in Sweden. My family decided that we should move to Canada because they knew that we had more opportunities to have a better life closer to family and schools in Hamilton.

Borlange, Sweden is a small town, far from my Grandparents in Stockholm, and quite a boring place to live and grow up in. We finished the school year in Borlange and said goodbye to our teachers and friends. My family said good-bye to my dad's side of the family.

We flew to Stockholm's Airport and stayed overnight at a hotel there. That evening we had dinner with my Grandparents, Uncles and Aunts. We gave our last kisses and hugs to our family and said goodbye. The next morning we got dressed and got ready to go onto another airplane. We waited in a room full of other people waiting to get onto the airplane. When the airplane arrived we went up to the plane and gave our 4 tickets to a lady who worked there. We went into the plane and found our seats. We sat down and got comfortable but we were still really upset. We put the backpacks that we had underneath our seats. The plane took off and I was pretty frightened. The plane flight was 8 hours long. I slept a while and then I watched t.v. with headphones on. When the plane was landing my stomach felt strange.

When the airplane landed, I was happy to be on land. When I got off the plane my family rushed to get the tickets for the next plane. We waited a while and then the plane arrived. We got onto that plane and sat down. I asked my mom how long this ride was going to be. She said ''only 3 hours''. I was tired so I slept on this plane flight. When the plane landed we got off. We had to walk to a place were we can get out luggages. When we saw our luggages my dad and mom went over to get them.

Then we got our bags and luggages together and tried finding my Grandpa and Grandma Vella. My mom was the one to spot them and when we saw them we ran up to them. We kissed and hugged them. After leaving the airport my Grandpa drove us to their house.

When we got there my Aunts and Uncles were all there with my cousins. We hugged them and we went inside the house. We had supper at their house and I knew we had to stay there until we find our own home. We stayed at my Grandparent's house for a couple of weeks while my parents were trying to find a house. When my parents made up their mind on what house they wanted, they brought my brother, Erik and I to the new house. We all decided we liked it.

A couple weeks later we moved into the newly built house. It took us quite a while to get used to the new house. We slept on the floor the first night until our furniture arrived the next day. The furniture travelled to Canada on a boat. We started thinking about school for Erik and I.

My mom knew that a new school was opening named Mother Teresa. She thought that was a good school because we lived close by and my Aunt and Uncle lived up the street. My mom insisted that we go to a Catholic School.

The first day of school I was really scared and nervous. I hoped that my new teacher Mrs. Petigrew was going to be nice. I went to my bus stop and waited for the bus. I was scared because I didn't know how to speak English.

When the bus came I said goodbye to my mom. The bus ride was not that long and I saw new people who were going to my school. When I got to the school I saw the teachers lined up for their class and I saw Mrs. Petigrew so I went into her line. I saw the people in my class. When we got into the class we were seated at desks in groups of 4. Three other girls sat with me. I was still nervous.

The teacher took attendance. We worked a lot during the day and I was learning more English as the day went by. When it was 3:00 o'clock I went onto the bus again and went home. My mom was waiting at the bus stop and she asked me how my day went. I said "okay". From that day, my mom stopped speaking Swedish to me.

The end.......
