Ontario

The word "Ontario" can be traced back to as early as 1641. It is believed to come from the Iroquois language and means beautiful or sparkling water. Ontario is called "The Land of a Thousand Lakes".

Facts about the province of Ontario

The province is Canada's second largest with 11 million square miles, 2 ½ times Sweden's surface. Of the Ontario 11 million inhabitants has only 7.6 million English speakers. The rest is just ½ million speakers and a large amount of immigrants. Half the population live in southern Ontario in the western part of Lake Ontario. Ontario has many similarities with Sweden as strong industry with great export, forestry and agriculture.

Political System

Both Canada and the province of Ontario has a parliamentary system of the old British type. The Parlamentet's seat is in Toronto. The Prime Minister is Dalton McGuinty.

The attraction number 1 is obviously Niagara Falls. The best link to information about the falls is Info Niagara. I visit the cases several times each year. The picture to the right shows the "horseshoe falls", the Canadian portion of the two falls.
