Web Content Accessibility GuidelinesUsers can be disabled in many ways, but most can find a way to access a computer. Whether or not users are disabled, it is a good policy to provide different ways to navigate a site. We have tested this website to how well it matches the W3C standards.
However, we are not completely in compliance with the guidelines due to
various reasons. How do you make a Web page accessible? W3C GuidelinesThese guidelines explain how to make Web content accessible to people with disabilities. The guidelines are intended for all Web content developers and for developers of authoring tools. The primary goal of these guidelines is to promote accessibility. However, following them will also make Web content more available to all users. Following these guidelines will also help people find information on the Web more quickly. These guidelines do not discourage content developers from using images, video, etc., but rather explain how to make multimedia content more accessible to a wide audience. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 W3C Recommendation 5-May-1999 Tools and ArticlesBobby is a tool for Web page authors. It will help them identify changes to their pages needed so users with disabilities can more easily use their Web pages. For example, a blind user will be aided by adding a sound track to a movie, and a hard-of-hearing user will be aided by a written transcript of a sound file on a Web page. Bobby will recommend that these be added if they do not already exist. World Wide Web Accessibility to People with Disabilities A Usability Perspective The usability of the World Wide Web (WWW) and other types of information networks, for people with disabilities is dependent not only on the accessibility of the WWW Browsers(i.e. NCSA Mosaic, Netscape, Lynx), but also the structure of the information available on the WWW and the tools used to create and display information placed on the WWW. The A-Prompt toolkit is designed to make the Internet more accessible by prompting HTML authors to write better documents. It is not a complete program by itself but rather a module that is embedded within an HTML editor program. Authoring Accessible Web Pages. The Internet community has grown at an exponential rate. Most new Internet users go on-line using graphics-oriented World Wide Web browsers like Netscape, Microsoft Explorer or Cello. A wide variety of information and services are available on these Internet Web pages. As a centre of expertise, the Employment Equity Positive Measures Program Directorate of the Public Service Commission of Canada leads on Internet and accessibility issues.
